LITHIUM BATTERIES
To Lithium or not to Lithium?

Pros - Lighter and can be charged quicker. More cycles and more tolerance in higher temperatures.
Cons - Expensive, Slightly more complicated to install.
The main benefit of lithium is the ability to charge it back up quickly.
​
There isn't much point installing a large lithium battery bank onto your, boat, RV or trailer if its not paired with an equally large charging system.
​
Lithium batteries also require battery monitoring systems (BMS) and protection devices which disconnect loads or chargers in the event of under / over voltages.
Victrons lithium batteries are all "Smart" providing status and health on any smartphone.
Correctly designed lithium systems will last longer than traditional batteries.
Equally never discharging below 50% will also extend battery life to 5000 cycles.

Lithium batteries will take as much current as they can get whilst charging. Charging direct from alternators will likely burn the alternators out. DC:DC chargers should be used to regulate the charge.

Loads will need to be connected through a battery dissconnect. This allows the battery BMS to dissconnect the loads under low voltage conditions.

Likewise, charge sources will need to be connected through a switch or battery protect so the BMS can stop them overcharging the battery.

Inverter / Chargers need to switch at under and over voltage conditions. This is achieved via a network connection dirrectly to the BMS.

Calculate recharge time by dividing total battery bank Ah by Charger Amps then divide by 2. Assuming you only discharge to 50%.
